It is starting to be very evident to me that time is of the essence in recovering a lost item. The sooner we start the fewer the opportunities for outside variables to come into play. I have had several searches now, during which someone approaches me and asks what I am looking for. They actually already know because they had put two and two together. A metal detectorist looking for an item in a location where they found something valuable. When I tell them, they produce the exact item as they had found it earlier and hand it over to the owner. Although it was not found using the metal detector, the very presence of the detector made the recovery possible. The best thing to do when you lose something, is to start the hunt immediately. I am sure there are other times when the finder didn't see us searching and as a result, the return was never made. Here is a video of a search I just finished with the result being what I just described.
